At the airport, Nia texts Anna to ask if she can stay. TEXT FROM THE AIRPORT
Anna, I’ll be in your city for ten days. Can I stay with you? Totally fine if not — I have another option.
Anna looks at her phone and feels pressured to agree.
Ten days?! How can anyone ask that? Now there is no way to say no.
Nia calmly waits for a simple answer.
Yes or no. Simple.
Anna declines in a long message, and Nia accepts the answer briefly.
Nia, I’m so sorry. I really would like to, but I can’t.
All good, Anna. I’ll book a hotel. Thanks!
Anna worries, while Nia remembers the exchange without resentment. TWO WEEKS LATER
She must resent me.

Nia asks directly because refusal is an ordinary answer to her. Anna only asks when she is almost certain the answer will be yes, so the question itself feels like pressure. If refusal really is fine, say it plainly: you can say no, and nothing between us will change.
